Connecting with the LA Connectors for Students with Significant Disabilities
In winter 2016, Louisiana Connectors representing grades K-12 ELA and Math for students with significant disabilities were approved by BESE. The connectors represent the key ideas from the Louisiana student standards. The Louisiana student standards represent grade level learning expectations for all students. Students with disabilities must have access to grade level content and we must provide developmentally appropriate opportunities for all students to achieve grade level standards. The connectors are the missing piece to the puzzle in regards to providing access to grade level expectations for students with significant disabilities. The Louisiana Department of Education has developed several resources to support teachers as they begin to use and understand the connectors. The Resources developed by LDOE include:
· Louisiana Connectors Crosswalks with Student Standards,
· Essential Element Cards,
· Adapting Lesson Plans Guides,
· Student Response Cards, and
· Case Studies.
What’s next? LDOE has decided that the new LEAP Connect assessment will replace the LAA1 test in Spring 2018. LDOE has promised a preview of the new LEAP Connect test in Fall 2017. We can also expect specialized resources aligned to the ELA Guidebooks and Draft Science Connectors this fall. The Louisiana Connectors for students with significant disabilities were created to provide access to grade level content expectations for students with significant disabilities. Ideally, as educators we should promote inclusive practices, whenever and wherever possible. The connectors are a great starting point for collaboration and discussions about differentiation among all educators. Ultimately, the goal is to provide access and opportunities for all students.
