I wrote a dissertation on the importance of social skills instruction back in 2014 so I understand the positive impact that social skills can have on a child’s educational success and entire life. Despite the political distractions and negativity surrounding social emotional learning, academic success is no longer solely defined by grades and test scores. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) has become a vital part of education, helping students develop essential life skills such as self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, and effective communication.
SEL equips students to manage stress, build healthy relationships, and make responsible decisions—skills that are crucial both inside and outside the classroom. Studies show that incorporating SEL not only improves academic performance but also reduces behavioral issues and fosters a positive school climate. Social skills can help improve our communities outside of school.
By prioritizing SEL, educators create environments where students feel safe, valued, and motivated to learn. SEL prepares students not just for academic success, but for lifelong success.
